Unformatted text preview: Sandstone present in a field area contains abundant well- rounded quartz grains and abundant angular granite rock fragments. The presence of the two appears to be inconsistent (both are hard but one is angular and one rounded). Explain. 1. Two different source areas one closer to the depositional site (angular granite grains) and one much farther away (rounded granite). Areas could also have been active at different times. 2. Mixing of grains from two depositional processes water, which produced angular granite clasts and wind that produced rounded quartz grains still probably presumes two source areas. 3. One source area geographically but that source area contains several different lithologies granite that will produce angular clasts and sandstone which will produce rounded quartz grains. Sandstone produces what is termed second-cycle quartz; grains were rounded in a previous transport cycle. Based on meaning of word parsimonious which do you think is more likely? Clastic Fabric Fabric is the spatial arrangement of grains in a sediment or sedimentary rock. Includes concept of grain packing . Packing - refers to the spacing and density of grains...
