2. function of the energy in the system – so grain sizes you see reflect energy (flow velocity) at time of deposition

Two caveats(cautions) to size as indicator of energy: 1. size also depends on the grain sizes available for transport and deposition so it reflects weathering and erosion processes in the source area and nature of the source rock Because both of these factors influence sizes of sediment produced at the source

Granite and schist – how could weathering of these two lithologies produce different sediment sizes?

2. Size we ultimately see in rocks may not be size deposited because of diagenesis – some may be smaller due to dissolution and some can be larger due to cement overgrowths Calcite attacks framework grains (quartz) and partly dissolves and replaces the quartz

If rivers move sediment away from source area, how should grain size change in the direction of transport? A. It should get smaller B. It should get larger C. No consistent pattern

Why should that change in grain size happen? A. Grains get abraded with transport so decrease in size B. Gradient and Energy decrease away from the sediment source so progressively smaller grains continue to be transported C. Both probably contribute D. Both probably contribute but gradient & energy more important E. I don’t know
