Lab Report 1 The Diels-Alder Reaction Performed 1/27/10 Purpose of Experiment The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate the formation of six-membered rings by a cycloaddition reaction. Main Reaction The Diels-Alder reaction performed was an reaction between 1,3-butadiene with maleic anhydride to give 4-cyclohexene-cis-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride. The 1,3-butadiene, a gas at room temperature, was obtained in situ by thermally decomposing 3-sulfolene. Procedure Essentially, we added all reagents to a flask and made sure all solids were dissolved. A stirbar was added, and then the entire solution was heated under the conditions required for reflux. This reflux was carefully monitored in order to prevent too fast a reflux or a stoppage of boiling. Full instructions can be found on page 416 of the book.
