Capacitors and Electrostatics Lab Partners: TA: SLN: Abstract: To observe capacitors and their properties, while measuring voltage using charge sharing method, and an unknown capacitor is identified using the same method with a resistor. Resistors manage the process of exponential decay, which helps to determine the time constant and the magnitude of the unknown capacitor.

Objective: Investigate capacitors and to become acquainted with some basic principles of electrostatics. Procedure: A: Electrostatics 1) Rub glass rod with a cloth 2) Touch the input and run the glass rob back and forth along the input 3) After zeroing the meter by shorting, rub a rubber rod with the same cloth and transfer this charge to the input of voltage follower 4) Observe the DVM of both the rubber and the glass rod. B: Charging and Discharging a Capacitor 1) Connect the voltage to the 5V supply on the breadboard unit, and the DVM should read 5V. 2) The voltage should stay after you disconnect it from the positive Minigrabber from 5V supply. 3) Discharge the capacitor by touching the same positive post momentarily to the ground post of the 5V supply. C: Sharing Charge Between Capacitors 1) Insert a 1μF capacitor into the breadboard 2) Minigrabbers are connected to the input of the voltage follower with the 0.1 μF capacitor, making a 1.1 μF capacitor, which should be completely discharged so that the DVM reads 0
3) Charge the second 1 μF capacitor to 5V and touch it to the uncharged 1.1 μF capacitor that is connected to the voltage follower
