Chapter 15. Skeletal, Muscular, and Nervous Systems Lesson 1 - The Skeletal System Functions - structure (framework) - protect internal tissues and organs - store minerals like calcium and phosphorous - 2 types 1. Axial skeleton – 80 bones of the skull, spine, ribs, vertebrae, and sternum. 2. Appendicular skeleton- 126 bones of the upper and lower limbs, shoulders, and hips. Types of Bones Long bone – such as humerus; The end is called epiphysis Short bone - length = width; ankles, wrists. Flat bone – thinner and flatter than other bones; such as skull or shoulder blade, or scapula; protect organs. Irregular bones – irregularly shaped bones; such as facial bones or vertebrae; to not fit into other categories. Cartilage – a strong flexible connective tissue; embryo has only it which bones will develop. Ossification – process by which bone is formed, renewed, and repaired.
