1 CSE452 Lecture 11: Illumination Slide 1 CSE452 Computer Graphics CSE452 Computer Graphics Lecture 11: Illumination CSE452 Lecture 11: Illumination Slide 2 Physics of Light Physics of Light Each “unit” of light is a photon Emitted from light sources and “bounces” around the scene When a photon hits a surface it can be (with some probability) Absorbed (turns into heat, other energy) Reflected Refracted/pass through the object, but traveling at a different angle Bounce around inside the object and emerge elsewhere (subsurface scattering) What happens to the photon depends on: The frequency of the photon and the surface material Different frequencies have different absorption/reflection rates What angle the photon strikes the surface also changes the probabilities
