William Schwert, 2002-2010 2 Short-game Skill The first thing I want to do is get a measure of putting performance when you do not get a “green in regulation (GIR)” • OTH_PUTTS = AVG_PUTTS-GIR_PUTTS*18*(GIR/100) • To put this on a per hole basis, divide by the number of holes where you do not get a GIR, 18*(1-(GIR/100)) • OTH_PUTTS= (AVG_PUTTS-GIR_PUTTS*18*(GIR/100))/(18*(1-(GIR/100))) => This will measure short-game skill (getting in the hole in the fewest number of putts after chipping/pitching to get on the green) Derive a Measure of Accuracy for Iron Shots • The are two things that determine the likelihood of getting on the green in regulation (GIR) – Driving skill and skill with fairway iron shots – We don’t have a direct measure of skill with irons, so we derive one indirectly: • Regress GIR on DRIVEDIST and DRIVEACCUR • Then, the residual from this regression is the part of GIR that is uncorrelated with driving skill (as measured by DRIVEDIST and DRIVEACCUR) • We will call this variable IRONACCUR, since it is a proxy for iron accuracy 2009 PGA Performance APS 425 - Advanced Managerial Data Analysis (c) Prof. G. William Schwert, 2002-2010 3 Derive a Measure of Accuracy for Iron Shots If a PGA golfer can improve driving distance by 10 yards, then the percent of greens in regulation improves by 2% If a PGA golfer can improve driving accuracy by 10%, then the percent of greens in regulation improves by 4% These two variables explain about 53% of the variation in GIR Derive a Measure of Accuracy for Iron Shots So we will create a new variable, IRON_ACCUR, which transforms the regression residual to have the same mean and standard deviation as GIR regression residual to have the same mean and standard deviation as GIR, but which is uncorrelated with the driving variables, DRIVEDIST and DRIVEACCUR 2009 PGA Performance...
