Amy Rice BSC 2010L 9/11/08 Homework Assignment #2 Biological Chemistry (Lab 2) 1) A color change from clear blue to a cloudy pale color (anything from green to orange- brown) indicates that the solution tests positive for simple reducing sugars. In our case, the solution turned a very pale yellow. Activity IIA- Testing for Reducing Sugars Substance Reaction Water Solution remained blue (no reaction) Glucose Solution turned cloudy pale yellow Starch Solution remained blue (no reaction) 2) The Glucose Solution was the only carbohydrate solution that contained reducing sugars. 3) The presence of a carbonyl group (a carbon atom double bonded to an oxygen atom) is what produced a positive reaction with Benedict’s reagent. 4) Carbohydrates have many important functions, but the two main ones are that it serves as a short-term storage for energy and provides structural integrity (in plants, mostly). 5) Activity IIB- Test for Starches Substance Reaction Water Solution remained a rust color (no reaction) Glucose
