Amy Rice BSC 2010L 9/25/08 Homework Assignment #4 Diffusion, Osmosis, and Cell Membranes (Lab 4) I. Diffusion and Molecular Motion 1. Both the water molecules and dye particles contained a lot of energy, some of it in the form of kinetic energy. The dye particles were moving around, partly because of their own energy, but mostly as a result of the water molecules bumping into them. 2. The water and dye particles will eventually reach equilibrium in the droplet on the slide. However, the molecules will not stop moving once equilibrium is reached; they will be moving, but have no net movement. II. Temperature and Diffusion 1. After three minutes, the test tube with warm water in it had greater diffusion than the test tube with room-temperature water in it. 2. When the temperature of the water is increased, this increases the kinetic energy (which in turn increases molecular collision). Since molecules are colliding more frequently, diffusion is moving at a greater speed 3. Eventually, the test tube with room-temperature water will reach the same
