Also study pp. 498-502 in your text, Answer the following questions as completely as you can. 1. Why was it necessary for the nation to concentrate on railroad expansion? It was necessary for the nation to concentrate on railroad expansion because traveling across the Unites States was a very expensive, tedious, and long journey. 2. What were some of the obstacles to railroad expansion in general? Both the hard terrain and the Plains Indians were obstacles that hindered the progress of railroad expansion. 3. What were some of the obstacles to building the Central Pacific? The Union Pacific? Some of the obstacles that faced the Central Pacific were the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Chinese workers’ refusal to work until they were given higher wages. 4. The federal government gave the companies rights of way of 200 feet on each side of the track and financial aid of $16,000 to $48,000 for each mile of track laid. I think that the government was right in being involved in business projects like that, ones that will unite us as a country and make things better for everyone. 5. Some of the positive aspects of railroad expansion were a more united agricultural industry across the United States, cheaper and faster travel opportunity, the formation of four time zones, and the founding of more towns across the Great Plains.
