For the beam cross-sections shown in cases (a), (b), and (c), the concrete has a compressive strength of f c '=3500 psi and the steel yield strength is f y =60000 psi. The beam width is b =14 in and depth of the compression steel is d'=3.0 in as shown. For Case (a) the tension steel is A s =4#11 bars and there is no compression steel. For Case (b) the tension steel is A s =4#11 bars and the compression steel is A s '=2#11 bars. For case (c) the tension steel is A s =6#11 bars placed in two rows as shown and the compression steel is A s '=2#11 bars. For each case determine the following: ( i ) the effective depth d of the tension steel; ( ii ) whether or not the compression steel A s ' has yielded at failure (need do this only for cases (b) and (c) where compression steel is present); (
