Anirudh Kulkarni Mrs. Derrow 15 November 2009 Thesis: It is crucial to understand the ideals between Heaven and Hell, which Dostoevsky infuses in Crime and Punishment in order to better understand Raskolnikov’s moral dilemmas and thought processes after he committed the murder. 1) The ideas of Heaven and Hell are important because they are the determining factor on how a person acts when he in the world a) Dante believed that an individual’s future was a result of how the person behaved when he was in the world i) The way society acts on Earth determines whether they will go to heaven or hell. ii) In order to go to heaven, society or an individual needed to have a strong belief in God b) Shakespeare, unlike Dante believed that spiritual belief was not crucial, instead living a healthy life on Earth was more beneficial c) In Crime and Punishment , Dostoevsky combines both Shakespeare’s and Dante’s belief in a modified version of the passage to heaven and hell i) Dostoevsky believes that the individual is a two dimensional character
