Kulkarni 1 Anirudh Kulkarni Mrs. Derrow AP English III (1) 7 November 2009 Raymond J. Wilson, III, wrote an essay analyzing Raskolnikov’s dream in Crime and Punishment , in Literature and Psychology , published in 1976. In this essay, Wilson dissects Raskolnikov’s dream in Doestevesky’s Crime and Punishment and uses that to analyze Raskolnikov’s behavior. Wilson stresses that there is no clear-cut answer to Raskolnikov’s personality, but instead it is more intricate. This essay takes a clear stance upon a controversial issue. While the “consensus” is that Raskolnikov’s is a Jekyll-Hyde character, Wilson offers a new perspective to a previously accepted theory. Other than the fact that this paper was written in 1976, Wilson offers no other historical context. Upon further inspection it can be noted that the 70’s were filled with the questioning of higher authority and the social rebellion. Wilson’s essay is also a type of questioning a belief, one that remained steadfastly strong
