Jamie Cohen Due: October 15 th , 2008 Philosophy: Equality of Opportunity Instructor: Vincent Baltazar Third Essay Assignment: 1 st Draft In his Qualifications, Fairness, and Desert , George Sher defends equality of opportunity because it is the most efficient way to fill positions, it provides a guarantee to those people who have developed the necessary skills to fill those positions, and it is the fairest method possible. However, in his Equality of Opportunity, and Beyond , John Schaar expresses that equality of opportunity actually has negative consequences because it “leaves losers with no other justification for their failures.” However, because Schaar does not describe how having equality of opportunity would make society inefficient, and because Sher proved that having equality of opportunity absent would negatively affect the individual, Sher’s defense of equality of opportunity was more believable and accurate. One of Sher’s justifications for equality of opportunity is that selection by merit is the most efficient way of filling positions. When an employer has an option to choose
