Jamie Cohen Due: October 20 th , 2008 Philosophy: Equality of Opportunity Instructor: Vincent Baltazar Third Essay Assignment: 2 nd Draft In his Qualifications, Fairness, and Desert , George Sher defends equality of opportunity because it is the most efficient way to fill positions, it provides a guarantee to those people who have developed the necessary skills to fill those positions, and it is the fairest method possible. However, in his Equality of Opportunity, and Beyond , John Schaar expresses that equality of opportunity actually has negative consequences because it “leaves losers with no other justification for their failures.” However, because Schaar does not describe how having equality of opportunity would make society inefficient, and because Sher proved that having equality of opportunity absent would negatively affect the individual, Sher’s defense of equality of opportunity was more believable and accurate. George Sher believes that selection by merit is the most efficient way of filling positions. If an employer has an option to choose to hire a person that will contribute a great amount to the company and a person that would not contribute much to society, but has a credential unrelated to the position itself (such as being the son or daughter of the boss), the company would benefit more from hiring the person with greater qualifications. Thus the company would become more efficient if it hired people solely based on selection by merit. Additionally, Sher believes that selection by merit is a guarantee to those people who have developed their skills in order to obtain a position.
