Jamie Cohen Essay Assignment #5 (option 2) Instructor: Vincent Baltazar Equality of Opportunity Philosophy A parent-child relationship is one of the most noteworthy relationships in life. This type of relationship is different from any other relationship in that one agent, the parent has authority over another, the child. Although, it’s questionable whether the basis of this relationship’s purpose is to solely benefit of child, or to benefit both the child and the parents. In their “Parents’ Rights and the Value of the Family,” Harry Brighouse and Adam Swift argue that a parent-child relationship should be both parent and child centered. However, in their “Parental Rights-A role-based approach,” Sarah Hannan and Richard Vernon argue that a parent-child relationship should be child-centered. Brighouse and Swift believe that parents have rights in respect to their children. Thus, the parents are allowed to pursue certain of their own interests at some cost to the children’s interests, and it is wrong for anyone to prevent them from doing so. Additionally, they both state “there are things that are permissible for parents to do, for and with their children that is not permissible for anyone else to do.” Brighouse and Swift state that the justification of these components of parental rights is the interests of the parents only to limit the influence of society in determining the children’s lifestyle and beliefs. However, Hannan and Vernon argue it is not any better for parents to be the ones
