HIV…AIDS -developed mines for the czar’s navy in the Crimean war -sobreo: nitroglycerin (wildly exothermic, unstable, leaves no carbon residue) -in 1866 Nobel discovered how to stabilize nitroglycerin -silaca gel from diatomaceous earth + nitroglycerin = dynamite -met bertha von suttner an austrialan peace activist -nobel saw his armaments business as contributing to world peace…wanted to produce a machine that would have such devastating effect that war would from then on be impossible… noels logic was flawed -peace prize was established -nitroglycerin also ahs medicinal uses (nitroglycerin in the body is quickly converted to nitric oxide, a second messenger that causes smooth muscle to relax…prescribed for chest pain) -ultimate irony: had heart trouble and was prescribed to take nitroglycerin -died and donated 9 million dollars to an endowment that established a yearly prize in chem., physics, physiooty or medicine, literature, and peace
