Abstract Wild type Drosophila flies have bright red eyes, a light tan body, and five longitudinal wing veins that reach the end of the wing. The unknown (pine) flies however, have beige eyes, a dark brown body, and a second wing vein that is either cut short or is missing a piece in the middle. Using two crosses (unknown female x wild type male and wild type female x unknown male) it was determined that the mutation for dark body (symbolized dk) is autosomal recessive, the mutation for short vein (symbolized as sv) is autosomal recessive, and the mutations for eye color (symbolized as bg for beige and or for orange) is x-linked recessive. There is one gene controlling body color, one gene controlling wing vein, and two genes with epistasis controlling eye color. Since dark and short vein are autosomal, they assort independently with beige and orange. Dark and short vein are 26.44 map units apart. Orange and beige genes are on the x chromosome and are more than 50 map units apart—being physically linked but genetically unlinked. Using the male parent backcrosses 2 and 3, it was observed that the dark body gene and short vein gene are both located on chromosome 3. Using a female parent backcross 3, the gene loci for dark and short vein were determined as shown in the picture below. ----Ly--------sv--------------Sb---------------dk---- 32.18 41.81 58.2 72.95 The Ly and Sb represent known markers of chromosome 3 (lyra and stubble). Using the marker stock 4 female x unknown males, the F1xF1 cross allowed data for mapping on the x chromosome, which is shown below. 1A and 1B Crosses The unknown flies (pine) were significantly different from the wild type flies regarding the wing veins, body color, and eye color. The wild type flies have five longitudinal wing veins which all reached the end of the wings. However, the second wing vein of the unknown flies is either very short and only reached the middle of the wing, or reached the end of the wing but had a missing piece in the middle. The wild type flies’ body color is a light tan, while the unknown flies have a body color of a dark brown. Additionally, the wild type flies’ eye color is bright red, and the eye color of the unknown flies is beige. Since there were two different classes each for eye color, body color, and wing veins, for now I’ll assume that there are three different genes, which can be analyzed. The mutation for a beige eye color will be symbolized by the notation, bg. The mutation for a dark body color will be symbolized by the notation, dk, and the mutation for a short or semi-missing second longitudinal wing vein will be symbolized by the notation, sv. On May 28
