Pinker provides four qualities or features of consciousness. The first is to be “aware, to varying degrees, of a rich field of sensation.” (Pinker, 138) This is simple for to recognize in humans. We have the ability to sense colors, smells, touches, etc. in our surroundings. I believe that animals also have this quality. When I pet my dog, she lays on her back so I can rub her stomach. Her ears pin back and she starts to „purr‟. She is aware of her environment, as am I, and can process the information to a degree. Objects are unable to satisfy this quality. They are unable to sense their environment without assistance. For example, a „mood - ring‟ can change colors according to someone‟s temperature. This had to be programmed or designed by someone else in order to give the effect. The object does not sense the sensation on its own, its just reacting. The next feature is the spotlight of attention. I believe this is the ability to intake information and process it, not just memorize it. Pinker gives the example of
