Renee Bilsland September 25, 2008 Case #2: ELLEN A) Diagnosing Ellen In the case of Ellen I believe that she meets the criteria for Major Depressive  Disorder. 1. The Presence of a major depressive episode.    Ellen applies for this category because she exhibits at least five symptoms  during the same two week period.  The first symptom she exudes is that of  a depressed mood for most of the day.  It is explained that throughout the  duration of the day Ellen feels depressed except for when she is giving a  lecture at work where she is preoccupied with thoughts that are differing  from personal relations.  The second symptom that Ellen faces is that of  insomnia.   It is explained that Ellen rarely sleeps at night.   The third  symptom Ellen is faced with is that of feelings of worthlessness.   Ellen  feels as if she is worthless and doesn’t fit into society.   She feels that  because she is not married she cannot connect with others making her  worthless.  The fourth symptom Ellen faces daily is reoccurring thoughts of  suicide.  Ellen states that she is obsessed with thinking about suicide and  feels better when thinking about her plan to commit the suicide.  The fifth  symptom that Ellen is feels is that of a decrease in appetite.  Ellen is a  small woman who watches her weight carefully so now that she has  admitted   to  barely  eating   anything  this   poses   a  great  problem.     The  symptoms that Ellen is not experiencing in a dramatic way are that of:  feeling of diminished interest (work still interested her) in all activities,  psychomotor agitation or retardation nearly every day, and reduced ability  to think or concentrate (she is doing well in concentrating on her plans for
