CASE #5: RANDY A) Diagnosing Randy I believe Randy meets the criteria for schizophrenia. 1. Review DSM-IV a. At least two for the following symptoms, each present for a  significant portion of time during a one month period.   i. Delusions Randy is very adamant that the TV is the cause of the noise he hears  and that it stole his brain.  Randy meets this criterion. ii. Hallucinations Randy is not currently experiencing any hallucinations. iii. Disorganized speech Randy is not currently experiencing and disorganized speech  patterns. iv. Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior Randy’s behavior is much disorganized as he threatened a waitress,  was disruptive in jail and filed a report to the police.  Randy meets  criterion number four. v. Negative Symptoms Randy is showing negative symptoms through his social withdrawal.  Randy meets criterion number five. b. Functioning markedly below this level achieved prior to onset.

Randy is functioning below his norm prior to onset.  Before the onset  Randy was successful in school and his relationship.  Once the major life  stress of the concluding relationship happened the onset set in and his  behavior went south.  Randy meets this criterion.   c. Continuous signs of the disturbance for at least six months at  least one month of which includes symptoms in full and active  form (as opposed to attenuated form).  Knowing that Randy is now thirty and that he began to have issues his first  year of college (assuming that Randy began college immediately following  high school) we can conclude that Randy has been dealing with this
