Phosphofructokinase : major regulating enzyme in glycolysis; specifically, used to drive the second priming reaction of glycolysis transfers a phosphate from ATP to Fructose 6-phophaste creating Fructose 1,6-bisphosphate….this is an irreversible reaction (See pg 11 of the notebook and pg 584 of the book) Glycogen (or Starch) Phosphorylase: begins the breakdown of glycogen by cleaving off the nonreducing ends of the molecule; it will only cleave up to four units away from the 1,6 branch point (See pg 26 of the notebook and pg 486 and 717 of the book) Debranching Enzyme: comes into play after glycogen phosphorylase has cleaved off the nonreducing ends of a glycogen molecule; carries out two distinct reactions: (1) Glucotransferase Activity: removes a trisaccharide unit and transfers it to the end of another nearby branch leaving a single glucose unit behind (2) Glucosidase Activity: hydrolyzes the remaining glucosyl group linked alpha 1-6 from the chain (See pg 26 of the notebook and pg 716 of the book) Sucrase: enzyme responsible for cleaving sucrose into glucose and fructose (via hydrolysis) (See pg 20 of the notebook) Lactase: enzyme responsible for the breakdown of lactose into galactose and glucose (via hydrolysis): a deficiency of this enzyme leads to a condition known as lactose intolerance; in a study performed on rats it was noted that as they age their lactase activity decreases while their sucrase activity increases (See pg
