Definition of Hybrid Types • Type 1: Composites – Comprised of a matrix and reinforcement – Properties are some average of the constituent phases – Scale of composites is large compared to reinforcement • Type 2: Sandwich – One or more outer phases of a materials supported by an inner core (typically of lower density) – Higher flexural modulus than either components alone

Definition of Hybrid Types • Type 3: Lattice – Combination of material and space – Two types: HIGH connectivity (struts bend when lattice is loaded) and LOW connectivity (struts stretch under load) • Type 4: Segment – Divided into 3 categories by dimension – Segmentation lowers stiffness and increases damage tolerance
