Duong, Xuan 1 HDP 191 RP#3 Research Proposal 1. Preschool is usually the first interaction children have with other same aged children, so this plays an important part for children’s social development. Their social development is effected by many internal and external factors, Colwell and Lindsey examined associations between one’s preference of either same-sex, other-sex, or mixed-sex dyads and its effect on social competence among peers (2005). They have found that children’s gender and the gender of their playmate, along with what type of play (pretend or physical) are important factors when determining one’ social competence. Because their focus was on preference of pretend and physical play, Colwell and Lindsey failed to explain the reason for this preference. In addition to the gender preferences within dyads, I will also observe play behavior of these dyads and larger groups.
