HDP 191 RP#4 Research Methods 1. Hypothesis: a. Observing effects of social factors on playing behaviors of children. b. Study seeks to examine how behavior changes in regard to others. 2. Research Methods: Participants: Over a period of 10 weeks, observed 30 children from a university based preschool, ages 3 and 4. Classroom consists of about 15 girls and 15 boys. Observations were made during the hours of 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Operationalization of Variables: 1. Social factors: a. Solitary-play b. Group-play (2 or more) 2. Playing behaviors: b. 4 forms of play: i. Exercise play - gross locomotor movements that occur in the context of play and are characterized by physical vigor, but which may or may not be social (e.g., running, jumping, climbing) and may or may not involve objects, such as balls, bats, tricycles, monkey bars, etc. ii.
