Astronomy 1400 Review for Test 3 Please make sure you Carefully read each chapter Study the “ summary of key concepts ” at the end of each chapter. Know the material we have covered in class attending class is important ! The following is a review of the material discussed in class. All questions can be answered in a few words or sentences. All of these questions were answered in class or are in the text. If you need help with a particular question I will be happy to help provided you first make a significant EFFORT to answer the question on your own. Please bring an orange scantron and #2 pencil to the test: it will be 50 questions multiple choice. Know your “R” number!! You will not need a calculator. All of this review may not be on test 3—the extent of coverage will be announced in class. Anything not covered on test 3 will be covered on the final. For Chapter 7, begin with question 13 (1 through 12 were on test 2). Chapter 7 1. Why is comparative planetology useful? 2. What is the composition of the Sun? 3. What is the name of the current orbiting solar observatory? 4. What is going on with the Sun at Solar Max? Describe the activity of the sun at solar max. 5. Does the sunspot activity of the Sun affect the Earth? How so? 6. Why is the magnetic field of the Earth important? 7. What are the major patterns of motion in the solar system? What are the exceptions? 8. What are the characteristics of the two major types of planets? 9. What is the composition of terrestrials? Jovians? 10. How do terrestrials and Jovians compare in density? Mass? Number of Moons? 11. What is the planet with the lowest density? Compare its density to water. 12. Which planets have rings? 13. What planets have we sent spacecrafts to? Orbiters? Landers? 14. We have returned samples from what? 15. What are some major current missions? 16. Which planets have we sent spacecraft to? Which celestial bodies have we returned samples from? Landed on? Orbited? Flown by? 17. What was the first spacecraft launched? When and by whom? 18. Where do we find asteroids and comets? 19. What are asteroids and comets made of? 20. Know the location and characteristics of the Kuiper belt comets and the Oort cloud. Chapter 8 1. What is the nebular theory? What observational evidence is there for it? 2. Why was it important that the initial nebula was rotating? 3. As the nebula falls inward and its radius decreases, explain what happens in terms of conservation of energy and momentum? Why does the nebula heat up as it collapses? 4.
