Connor Scribner February 25 th 2009 History 2300 Hahn/Driver The Articles of Confederation vs The United States Constitution Since the existence of the United States, our government has been run under two different constitutions. The Articles of Confederation was the first, drafted by Congress in 1777, ratified by the states four years later on March 1, 1781. But it became very apparent very quickly that the Articles idea of “self-governing states” was its weakness and that the United States needed a strong, centralized, national government to govern over all of the states. The Articles lasted seven years before our second, and current Constitution was brought into play. On September 17, 1787, The Constitution of the United States was completed and signed. The government under the new Constitution began operations on March 4, 1789. In this essay I will compare and contrast the differences of the two documents.

Connor Scribner February 25 th 2009 History 2300 Hahn/Driver The Articles of Confederation sought to balance the need for national coordination of the War of Independence with widespread fear that centralized political power posed a danger to liberty. It explicitly declared the new national government to be a “perpetual union”. Under the Articles, the thirteen states retained their individual “sovereignty, freedom, and independence.” The national government consisted of a one-house congress, in which each state, no matter the size or population, cast a single vote.
