Week 4 Discussion 1The Lincoln Douglas Debate 1858The Lincoln-Douglas debates also known as The Great Debates of 1858 was a series ofseven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois, and Stephen Douglas a senator for the Democratic party. Both of these men were trying to win control of the Illinois General Assembly. The main issue discussed in all the seven debates was slavery in the United States and its further expansion into new territories. Douglas declared “black Republicans,” saying they posed a threat to the Constitution. Lincoln felt that the nation couldn’t survive if the slave state – free state continued. (Corbertt,2014).
