Connor Scribner History 2300 April 28, 2009 Henry Clay; an unsung hero The identity of Henry Clay is often overlooked. In short, Clay was a prominent public servant; serving the House of Representatives and the United States Senate numerous times. He was the peace commissioner in Ghent in the negotiations to end the war of 1812. He was the architect of the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850. He proposed the American System . Clay served as Secretary of State and then to top it all off he created the Whig Party, which soon came to be known as the Republican Party. So why is a man so distinguished so often forgotten? The only logical reason I can come to is that he never finished what he started and became president. Although he did run for the office in five different elections, but failed every time. Other than that I cannot tell you why he is forgotten. But, I can explain to you why he is one of many unsung heroes of our great country. Henry Clay was born into a middle class family in Hanover County, Virginia. He had eight true brothers and sisters, and seven stepbrothers and sisters. He studied law with George Wythe, mentor of Thomas Jefferson and

His eloquent way of speaking, friendly manner, and ambitions to be a public servant all led to his very successful career in politics, where he played many vital roles in the history of our great country.
