American History 2301 Exam 3 Review Identifications Dorie Miller – A cook in the United States Navy during attack on Pearl Harbor. He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross. Tuskegee Airmen – The group of African American pilots who flew with distinction during World War II as the 332 nd Fighter Group of the US Army Air Corps. They flew fighter planes that escorted US bomber planes in raids in Europe against German and other Axis targets. They never had a bomber shot down in their protection. Philip Randolph – Prominent African American civil rights leader and the founder of the March on Washington Movement. Also created the Fair Employment Practices Commission (FEPC). March on Washington Movement – The movement was designed to pressure the U.S. government into desegregating the armed forces and to provide fair working opportunities for African Americans. Washington Naval Conference – A military conference called by President Harding. It was attended by nations that had interest in the Pacific Ocean and East Asia. It was the first disarmament conference in history. Kellogg-Briand Pact 1928 – The pact was a multinational treaty that prohibited the use of war as an instrument of national policy. Neutrality Acts of 1930’s – U.S. declares itself neutral in beginning of World War II. This made it hard for U.S. to aid Britain against Nazi Germany. War bonds are debt securities issued by a government for the purpose of financing military operations during times of war. War bonds generate capital for the government and make civilians feel involved in their national militaries. The draft creates jobs for everyone, 6.5 million women to workforce.
