Some say racism was the cause of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Rather, foregin influence was the cause of the 1994 Rwandan genocide due to support from colonizers, militarian support of killing, and lack of foregin intervention. When East Africa was colonized by Belgium in 1922, Belgians associated Hutus and Tutsis with social statuses. Tutsis were seen as a higher class and social status than Hutus in Belgium, tusis migrated while Hutus were natives in East Africa. After the shift in Belgian policy after World War II, the hierarchy began to loosen and a Hutu middle class was developed, because of this a Hutu revolution began to form. Belgians then removed all Tutsis from power, and an anti-tutsis movement formed. In 1962 Rwanda became an independent democracy, which meant Hutus had rule.
