Narmene Bensaber Extra Credit Legal Studies Song DNA Law in Lyrics (DNA) Kendrick Lamar, a modern day rap artist, wrote a song in 2017 called “DNA”. He has multiple songs confronting the issues that the African American race face in todays world, discussing topics such as police brutality and discrimination in any form. While other hip hop artist write about sex, money, and drugs. Kendrick Lamar spends his time sending a message to the world about the brutality against African Americans. Throughout the song kendrick is describing the hardships that him and his race often go through. He demonstrates in his lyric, “I know murder, conviction/Burners, boosters, burglars, ballers, dead, redemption/Scholars, fathers dead with kids...”(29-31). In this line he talks about what he has witnessed from birth to the age of 21 in crompton. He has seen people murdered and met murderers as well as witnessed many other crimes in his life. In a way this line demonstrates not only his struggles, but the negativity put on his race. He critiques his race in both positive and negative viewpoints both sending powerful meanings. DNA primarily focuses on black heritage and the importance of loyalty between one another. In today’s Trump society, loyalty and togetherness is extremely important in the African American society. DNA is a molecule constructed that builds an entire organisms body. This molecule cannot be altered and everything within this molecule is given at birth and progressed through time and environment. It decides what person someone will be and codes for their traits.
