Covalent Bonds Covalent Bonds Covalent bonds are bonds between atoms with similar electronegativities - C and H, any bond between atoms of same element; N-N or C-C for instance. Covalent bonds have SHARED electrons. This is the opposite extreme from ionic bonding (e - transfer), which is the bonding between atoms with large electronegativity differences. Many bonds are somewhere between pure covalent bonds and pure ionic bonding.

Lewis Structures Lewis Structures The Octet Rule!!!! B, C, N, O, F will never exceed an octet of valence e - ’s H has no more than 2 e - ’s Occasionally an atom will be short of an octet. This is OK, but should be avoided when possible. (BF 3 for instance) Elements in 3rd period and lower in the periodic table can “expand” their octet - These elements have access to unfilled orbitals that C, N, O and F cannot access. (S and P are common examples)
