The townspeople live in an orderly fashion, no extraordinary event ever stumbling upon them. This all changed when a Christopher Mahon finds himself revealed a supposed murder to the Flaherty family. Pegeen finds a man she can only dream of. She eventually fell in love with, only to later hate him. But this hate quickly turns into regret in the latter part of the book. Pegeen is a beautiful and intelligent daughter of a pub owner. She has not much freedom, in the sense that her father decides the person she shall marry. His pick is Shawn, a young stout pallid fellow whom Pegeen shuns. Pegeen saw Shawn as her future groom until Christy entered her life. One night, Christy stumbles upon the Flaherty household, after wounding his father. He explains he murdered the man because of his wretched personality and wrong-doings. Pegeen falls in love with him because of his man because of his wretched personality and wrong-doings....
