Unformatted text preview: Brain Development March 25, 2008 Brain Development- starts 3 weeks after conception- neural tube starts as neural plate- spina bifida – damage to the spinal cord- folic acid – in prenatal vitamin, an increase of this will increase damage in the spina bifida- Synapses or connections – the brain and the body are connecting, the arms and legs start to move- Will feel movement around the 5 th month- Cerebral cortex: responsible for memory- 90% of the brain development happens in the first 5 years. Neurons- synapses – connections- myelin – coating on brain connections- “wiring” – every movement, sight, smell, touch, sound, the baby’s brain is making connections.- “failure to thrive” – due to inadequate stimulation- “use it or lose it” – has to be stimulated- “windows of opportunity” – if the brain is not stimulated at the right time, the opportunity...
