Unformatted text preview: Chapter 1 Outline Brian Nelson America Before Columbus- Tribes before Columbus included Mayas and Aztecs.- Aztecs designed a brutal religious system consisting of sacrifice- Aztecs considered “savages” even with their advanced calendar, mathematics, and writing system. Europe Looks Westward- Europe looks for new land because of population growth and landlords wanted to purchase goods from distant regions.- Europe assumed that if the traveled west they could reach Asia- Portugal was the first to explore the west. (Prince Henry the Navigator)- Columbus was one of the few people in England that believed Asia could be reached by traveling west.- With no one to travel with Columbus west in Europe, Columbus turns to Spain for a crew.- Took the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria- Left Spain for “Asia” in August 1492- When arrived in the West, he landed on an Island in the Bahamas.- Called natives there Indians because he thought he landed in the Indies....
