Brian Nelson Period 2 AP US History Tyranny Definition - A government in which a single ruler is vested with absolute power. Common Sense and John Locke Definition - Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine . It was first published anonymously on January 10 , 1776 , during the American Revolution . Paine wrote it with editorial feedback from Benjamin Rush , who came up with the title. The document denounced British rule and, through its immense popularity, contributed to the start of the American Revolution . Continental Congress Definition - a body of representatives appointed by the legislatures of twelve North American colonies of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1774. It met briefly then set up its successor, the Second Continental Congress , which organized the Americans into war against Britain. The two bodies together comprise the Continental Congress . The First Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia in 1774, with 55 members representing all American colonies except Georgia . Thomas Jefferson Definition - the third President of the United States , the main author of the Declaration of Independence , and one of the most influential Founding Fathers for his promotion of the ideals of Republicanism in the United States .
