Veterinarian Patience Parker Madera South High School Period 2 1/15/19 The career that I am researching is a Veterinarian and the differences between a small animal vet and a livestock Veterinarian. I chose this because it is what I am planning to be as my 1
future career. I have been dedicated to this career for as long as I remember and it has always interested me. This career is interesting to me because veterinarians help improve the quality of life of animals and help people keep their animals happy and healthy. A Veterinarian's duties include treating and performing surgery on numerous types of animals. Some only work on small household animals like dogs and cats, some work with larger livestock animals like horses and cattle, and some work at places like a zoo with exotic animals. The working conditions depend on the type of animals the veterinarian works on. A clinic is typically where smaller and household animals are treated. A clinic is usually very busy with different animals, owners, and different employees. It should be kept organized and clean to make the treatment of animals as easy as possible. If the veterinarian works with livestock they will usually have to drive to different houses, factories, and farms. They will have to work in unsafe conditions; working with larger animals means a larger chance of getting injured. Because the vet usually won't be indoors, they will have to work in all types of weather and perform surgery in unsafe and unsanitary conditions. In order to work in this field of work the veterinarian needs to have good health and have good stamina. According to Karen Farnen in the article Physical or Personality Traits to Become a Vet , “ Vets need courage when dealing with animals that bite, kick and scratch. They need the stamina to work long hours or at night when animals get sick. If they work with large animals, they need physical strength. Veterinarians also require manual dexterity to perform procedures and surgeries on animals” ( Farnen, Karen) . Veterinarians will also need to have the ability to quickly make decisions and remember essential information that will be required to know. The average salary for the two different types of veterinarians is different because of the difference in schooling and the risk of getting injured. Because smaller animals are less dangerous and Small animal Veterinarians are more common they make less. The average salary
