Arghaya Dalapati Aaren Washington Chem 1310 – Lab September 8, 2009 Post-Lab 1 A. Balance: When is a Gram, A Gram? 1. Given the circumstances, no manufacture would state that they would always give exactly 1.0 grams. Thus manufactures have an estimate of how about how much will be actually given in the sugar packets. In this case, if analyzing the precision and accuracy to the first decimal the manufacture has an error on average of +/- .1. This is usually close enough to state, that the calculated value is accurate, since it is so close to the expected value. Likewise since the majority of data falls within +/- .1 one can state that the data is also precise since all the data fell so close within each other. But when analyzing the data to the 3 rd decimal, our data falls apart. There is way to much variability to state that the data is actually accurate, and precise. Depending on your circumstance and frame of error, the same data can be analyzed as accurate/precise as well as inaccurate and imprecise. 2. The experiment called upon various methods of precision, the most obvious being using the same balance throughout the experiment. This was because of the variability which could be found between two different balances. There might be a slight mechanical problem, or a user related problem which causes the specific measurements to be skewed
