The ALU not only handles the arithmetic operations of the processor, but also the logic instructions. 2. (2) %0000 0001 … The AND instruction performs a bit-by-bit logical AND on the contents of the processor register and the operand. In this case, the only bit that contains a 1 in both is b 0 . 3. (2) clear (logic 0) … The Z flag is set only if the processor register contains all zeros. In this case, the accumulator contains %0000 0001, so the Z flag is clear (logic 0). 4. (3) %0000 1110 … The OR instruction performs a bit-by-bit logical OR on the contents of the processor register and the operand. In this case, bit b 3 , b 2 , and b 1 are logic 1’s in either Accumulator B or in the operand. Therefore, these bits are set in the result, which is placed in Accumulator B. The other bits do not contain 1’s.
