Stat notes 19:10 Data: values that are collected, analyzed and summarized Data set: Collection of data for a particular study  Element: entities on which data are collected (people, houses, countries…) Random variables: an uncertain quantity whose value depends on chance  (height, shoe size, sex, speed…) the names of the columns of data. Observations: set of measurements collected for a particular element (a single  row of data) Types of random variables Quantitative: observations that are measured on a numerical scale that  measures how much or how many o Discreet: from a counting process, round # o Continuous: from a measuring or weighing process, never exact Qualitative: nonnumeric data that can be classified into a group of categories  o Nominal: a description of the element, ex: using 1 and 2 in the place of  male and female o Ordinal: a scale measure that indicates relative placement  Sample Average: (check papers for equations)
