Abnormal Psychology 302 Study Guide Exam II I. Anxiety, Fear, and Panic: a. Anxiety : a negative mood state characterized by apprehension about the future. b. Fear : emotion of an immediate alarm reaction to present danger or life-threatening emergencies. i. Components of anxiety and fear: 1. Physiological Response: increased heart rate, blood vessel constriction, sweating 2. Cognitive Response: unease of mental activity 3. Behavioral Response: action, fight or flight b. Autonomic nervous system activates fight or flight responses. c. Panic attacks : i. Situationally bound (cued): expected in a particular situation but not others ii. Situationally predisposed: combination of cued and uncued; may or may not occur in specific situation iii. Unexpected (uncued): occurs without warning d. Contributors to anxiety disorders: i. Biological contributors: inheritance of a tendency to be tense or uptight; no single gene; runs in families. ii. Psychological contributors: conditioning of fear and anxiety iii. Social contributors: stressful life events e. Comorbidity: anxiety is often diagnosed with depression II. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): a. Intense, uncontrollable, unfocused, chronic, and continuous worry; increased muscle tension distinguishes GAD from non-anxious people b. Symptoms: muscle tension, susceptibility to fatigue, worrying about minor daily events, agitation, some irritability, and difficulty sleeping. III. Panic Disorder with and without agoraphobia:
