INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY LABORATORY SAFETY Rev: 3/10/10 LABORATORY SAFETY AND BEHAVIOR - For a NORMALLY HEALTHY INDIVIDUAL , the microbes encountered during this semester’s labs are NOT OVERTLY PATHOGENIC , this is not to say that they cannot cause disease . You can safely handle these cultures and enjoy the scientific challenges of the lab exercises if you simultaneously imagine that each microbe is a dangerous pathogen, but remember that good technique ensures safety. The ‘ UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS ’ that are summarized below [and completely discussed in the material that is posted in the lab] were adapted from the guidelines developed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for handling patient specimens that are potentially contaminated with the agents of infectious diseases. Your understanding of those guidelines and incorporation of those ideas into your personal laboratory techniques will ensure the safety of yourself and of your fellows in any laboratory or scientific activity that you conduct during this semester or throughout your professional career .
