Humanity 3310 Culture and technology Youngjin Kim There is one question “What is it that keeps us from accepting ideas?” There will be many responses to that question from a person to another person. According to Joel Barker, the key answer is paradigms. If you look up dictionary for the meaning of paradigms, those pattern or model or example will be illustrated. Barker describes paradigms as problem-solving systems. It is often defined as sets of rules of regulations that do two things such as establishing boundaries and proving rules to be successful. In other words, it is the way how to be successful by solving problems within these boundaries. We often fail to anticipate significant new developments and try to deal with change more effectively. Paradigms act as a filter that screens data coming into scientist’s mind. That data match the expectations created by their paradigms, the more expected data was the more troubles that scientists perceive it. Sometimes, they distort the data until it fits into their
