Akber Malik Natural Science I: Einstein’s Universe NYT Assignment #2 NYT: From a Distant Comet, a Clue to Life  Scientists for the last several decades have been finding amino acids in some  meteorites, but more recently it has been believed that amino acids may exist further out  into the cosmos, where comets gather. Scientists are interested in the presence of amino  acids in the solar system because they are the most basic building block of life; amino  acids join together to make proteins, and proteins are responsible for all living things’  functions.  In January of 2004, a NASA space probe called Stardust collected samples from  the tail of dust and gas of a comet called Wild 2. The probe returned to earth two years

The samples showed that the amino acid glycine was present in the samples. Scientists and academics now believe that these discoveries show that the chemical reactions that produce glycine have been occurring for billions of years, throughout the early solar system. This was not always believed because some thought that these types of chemical reactions could only occur in warm and wet conditions, like those of an asteroid, but not those of a comet....
