Ryan Curtice Chemical Formulas 1) Zinc Chloride Clean and dry the evaporating dish and put it on the wire gauze Start heating the dish slightly and then hotter to make sure all the moisture is gone about 5 min Allow dish to cool down to room temperature then record mass and round to nearest 0.01g Pick up granular zinc sample and add 0.5g to the evaporating dish rounding to the nearest 0.01g Calculate the mass of the zinc Going slow but constant add 15 mL of 6 M HCL to the evaporating dish with the zinc in it If any zinc remains add an additional 5 mL of acid and continue to add 5 mL as needed until all zinc is dissolved Set up a steam bath using a 250-mL beaker and put evaporating dish on steam bath Keep on steam bath until most of the liquid is gone Heat again and allow dish to cool to room temp then record the mass Reheat the dish and record the mass again and the masses should be within 0.02g and if not keep reheating and recording until they are Calculate the mass of the chlorine then calculate the empirical formula for zinc chloride
