Curtice 1 Ryan Curtice Reflective Writing 1 Math 2650 9/23/09 The process of statistical investigation is the techniques and tools that aid in the collection, organization, summarization, and interpretation of a collection of information referred to as data (1). The procedures used on the data are done to solve a problem and/or answer a question. The method from our text book uses a step by step process. The first step of the process is a problem that triggers the investigation. When doing an investigation with a group or a class the problem should be decided on together. This can be accomplished through different ways such as discussion or voting. Patricia Manchester, the 3 rd grade teacher from the lunchroom project found a topic that interested her students which was school lunch. Manchester said in the article, “For the study described here, I found that my normally enthusiastic students had many complaints about the schools lunch offerings and were eager to suggest changes. Her class discussion led to completing the first step which is a problem triggering the investigation. The problem that triggered the 3
