Lab IV: Work Hardening and Annealing of Brass ABSTRACT This paper described the effect of cold working on the mechanical properties of a brass strip by measuring the initial and final hardness. Moreover, the effect of cold working on the microstructure and effect of the annealing process on the mechanical properties were analyzed. During the experiment, materials included three strips of brass; calipers and Rockwell tester were used to measure dimensions and hardness of each sample, respectively; and a hot tank was used for annealing process. As the amount of cold rolling increased, the hardness was increased, whereas the ductility decreased. After the annealing process on the cold worked samples, the mechanical properties were recovered, which caused a reduction in hardness and increasing in ductility.

2 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION As shown in Figure 1, the brass strip sample was cold worked in the longitudinal direction of the strip. The initial and final values of dimension and hardness of the strips were measured by calipers and Rockwell tester, respectively. For each as-received strip, different percent cold work was applied.
