    The P-N Junction  Assumptions for analysis of pn junction : Step (Abrupt) Junction   - uniform doping n-  and p-regions with an abrupt change at the p- n junction.  Negligible carrier density in space charge  region ( depletion region ). Space charge neutrality outside space  charge region.

    P-N Junction at Thermal Equilibrium At thermal equilibrium , there is a balance between drift and diffusion currents so that there is  no net current   flowing through the semiconductor.    J P  (drift) + J P  (diffusion) = 0   J n   (drift)  + J n  (diffusion) = 0
