Unformatted text preview: The Process of Engineering Design Design ≠ Research? • Research – A careful investigation or study, especially of scholarly or scientific nature. – Research typically generates new knowledge. • Design – Tasks usually involve the integration of knowledge to devise, conceive, or invent. Design Process Plan the process to stay on track Document/Communicate Develop Solution Options Implement Solution Test/Evaluate Implemented Solution Evaluate Solutions Iterate: refine and improve based on evaluation Solution Stage Clarify Team Assignment Understand Problem and Context- Identify why design is needed- Identify current techniques used to solve problem - Identify constraints on design- Identify user needs for design Define design goals or criteria Design Analysis Stage Design Problem Analysis Stage • It is critical to carefully complete the Design Analysis Stage. • This work sets up the team’s ability to successfully complete the assigned task. Clarify Team Assignment Understand Problem and Context- Identify forces driving the design- Identify current techniques used to solve problem - Identify constraints on design- Identify user needs for design Define design goals or criteria Design Analysis Stage Design Problem Analysis Stage • A successful project must begin with developing a clear understanding of the team’s assignment. • Team Mission Statement – Signed off by ‘boss’. • Often misunderstandings arise in this stage. – Incomplete task – Actual problem not addressed Clarify Team Assignment Understand Problem and Context- Identify forces driving the design- Identify current techniques used to solve problem - Identify constraints on design- Identify user needs for design Define design goals or criteria Design Analysis Stage Understanding the Design Problem • Next, you must develop a clear understanding of the problem and its context. • These steps can be done in any order. • May include tasks such as: – Literature Review – Mentor or Project Sponsor may provide information – Surveys – Market Analysis Clarify Team Assignment Understand Problem and Context- Identify forces driving the design- Identify current techniques used to solve problem - Identify constraints on design- Identify user needs for design Define design goals or criteria Design Analysis Stage Understanding the Design Problem Clarify Team Assignment Understand Problem and Context- Identify forces driving the design- Identify current techniques used to solve problem - Identify constraints on design- Identify user needs for design Define design goals or criteria Design Analysis Stage • What are the driving forces behind a design?...
